TikTok Ads: Complete Guide to Advertising on TikTok in 2026

Learn everything about TikTok Ads Manager: campaign types, ad formats, Spark Ads, TikTok Pixel, targeting and creative best practices for effective TikTok advertising.

TikTok is no longer just a platform for dance videos. With over 1.5 billion monthly active users globally and increasingly powerful advertising tools, TikTok has become a serious sales channel. The ad platform has matured significantly over the past two years, and for many brands TikTok Ads now delivers better ROAS than established channels. Here is everything you need to know to get started — and to scale.

TikTok Ads Manager: Overview and campaign structure

TikTok Ads Manager is the advertising platform where you create, manage and optimize campaigns. The structure follows a three-tier model: Campaign (objective and budget), Ad Group (targeting, placement, bidding) and Ad (creative and copy).

Campaign objectives include Reach, Traffic, Video Views, Lead Generation, App Installs, Conversions and Catalog Sales. For most marketers, Conversions and Catalog Sales are the most important — they let TikTok's algorithm optimize for actual actions, not just clicks.

An important difference from Google Ads and Meta Ads: TikTok's algorithm learns faster with fewer ad groups. Best practice is to consolidate instead of fragment — start with 1-3 ad groups per campaign and let the algorithm do its job.

Ad formats: In-Feed, Spark Ads, TopView and more

In-Feed Ads are the standard format — videos up to 60 seconds that appear in the user's For You feed. They look like organic content, which is the entire point. Ads that feel like ads perform poorly on TikTok.

Spark Ads let you promote existing organic TikTok videos — either your own or a creator's content (with permission). Spark Ads retain all social proof (likes, comments, shares) and typically have 30-50% higher engagement than standard In-Feed Ads (TikTok, 2025). TopView is premium placement — the first ad the user sees when opening the app.

TikTok Shop Ads are the newest format and let users buy products directly in the app. Video Shopping Ads and Live Shopping Ads connect products to creative content. For e-commerce this is especially relevant — read more about TikTok marketing for organic strategy that amplifies paid campaigns.

  • In-Feed Ads: Standard video in For You feed (up to 60 sec)
  • Spark Ads: Promotion of existing organic content
  • TopView: First placement on app open (premium)
  • Branded Hashtag Challenge: Interactive campaign with a dedicated hashtag
  • TikTok Shop Ads: Direct in-app product sales

Targeting: Reaching the right audience on TikTok

TikTok offers demographic targeting (age, gender, location, language), interest-based targeting (based on content interaction), behavioral targeting (based on actions like video categories watched and hashtags followed), and device targeting (operating system, connection type).

Custom Audiences let you target your own lists — website visitors (via Pixel), app events, email lists and engagement with TikTok content. Lookalike Audiences find new users who resemble your best customers. Start with 1-5% lookalike for the best match.

My experience: Broad targeting with strong creative often performs better on TikTok than narrow audiences. TikTok's algorithm is excellent at finding the right users based on content interaction. Let the creative do the qualifying — specific content naturally attracts specific audiences.

Creative best practices: Think like a creator, not an advertiser

TikTok's own advice is "Don't make ads, make TikToks" — and it is not just a slogan. Ads produced in traditional advertising style consistently perform worse than content in native TikTok format. Use vertical video (9:16), natural audio, and a style that feels authentic.

The hook is everything. You have 1-2 seconds to stop the scroll. Effective hooks include: surprising facts, controversial claims, direct questions, visual stoppers, or "wait until you see this" phrasing. Test at least 3-5 hooks per concept. See our video marketing guide for more on video strategy.

UGC (user-generated content) and creator content typically performs 2-3 times better than brand-produced content on TikTok (TikTok Marketing Science, 2025). Partner with micro-influencers or use platforms like TikTok Creator Marketplace to find creators. Read our UGC strategy guide and our ad copy guide for inspiration.

Spark Ads: How to boost organic content effectively

Spark Ads are TikTok's most effective ad format for many advertisers. Instead of creating a new ad, you promote an existing TikTok video that has already shown organic engagement. This gives you a double advantage: you already know the content works, and you retain all social proof.

To use Spark Ads you need an authorization code from the video creator. Once you have the code, you can connect the video to a campaign in Ads Manager and add a CTA button and landing page URL. Organic views and paid views accumulate on the same video, amplifying social proof.

Strategic recommendation: Publish organic content first, wait 24-48 hours to see which videos gain natural engagement, then spark the best ones. Videos with organic momentum perform better as Spark Ads than videos that did not gain traction organically. Need help with your TikTok ad strategy? Contact LeapJet for a tailored plan.

TikTok Pixel and Events API: Setup for precise tracking

TikTok Pixel is a JavaScript code installed on your website to track user actions (page view, add to cart, purchase). Events API is the server-side tracking alternative that sends events directly from your server to TikTok — more reliable and less affected by browser blocking.

For optimal performance, implement both — Pixel for real-time browser activity and Events API for accurate server-side data. Use deduplication (the event_id parameter) to avoid double counting. Our server-side tracking guide covers the technical details.

Prioritize these events for e-commerce: ViewContent, AddToCart, InitiateCheckout, CompletePayment. For lead generation: SubmitForm, Contact, Subscribe. The more data the Pixel collects, the better TikTok's algorithm becomes at finding the right users.

Bidding and budget strategies for TikTok

TikTok offers four bidding strategies: Lowest Cost (automatic, maximizes results within budget), Cost Cap (sets target CPA), Bid Cap (sets max bid per conversion) and Value-Based (optimizes for ROAS). For most advertisers, Lowest Cost is the best starting point.

Minimum budget per ad group is $20 per day. To give the algorithm enough data to optimize, I recommend at least $50-100 per day per ad group — TikTok itself recommends a budget that generates at least 50 conversions per week. Read our PPC budget guide for overall budget planning.

Important: Do not make large budget changes abruptly. TikTok's algorithm is sensitive to sudden changes — adjust by a maximum of 20-30% at a time. And do not evaluate performance too early: give ad groups at least 3-5 days (and ideally 50 conversions) before drawing conclusions.

TikTok Ads for different industries

E-commerce: TikTok Shop Ads, Dynamic Showcase Ads and Spark Ads with influencer content. Focus on product demonstrations and authentic reviews. Average ROAS for e-commerce on TikTok is 2-4x (TikTok, 2025).

B2B and services: Yes, TikTok works for B2B — especially for brand building and top-of-funnel. Use Spark Ads with professional content and thought leadership videos. Target with interest-based targeting and retarget with Google/LinkedIn. See the glossary for definitions of CPC, ROAS and UGC.

Local businesses: Use location-based targeting and local content. Restaurants, gyms and beauty salons often see very good ROI on TikTok because the platform rewards authentic, local content.

Measuring TikTok ad performance

TikTok Ads Manager gives you standard metrics like impressions, clicks, CTR, CPC and conversions. But to truly understand performance you also need to look at 2-second video view rate (indicator of hook effectiveness), completion rate (indicator of content quality) and conversion value (ROAS).

The attribution window matters: TikTok offers 1-day click, 7-day click and 1-day view as standard. For e-commerce I recommend 7-day click as the primary attribution model. For lead generation, 28-day click may give a more accurate picture. Our PPC reporting guide helps you set up correct reporting.

Pro tip: Use TikTok Attribution Analytics to understand the full customer journey. Compared to last-click data alone, full-funnel attribution often shows 20-40% more value attributed to TikTok Ads (TikTok Marketing Science, 2025). Want us to help you with TikTok advertising?
