Every sale follows a journey — from the moment someone first hears about you to when they sign the contract. The marketing funnel is the framework for understanding and optimizing this journey. There are three stages: TOFU (Top of Funnel) where you build awareness. MOFU (Middle of Funnel) where you nurture and build trust. BOFU (Bottom of Funnel) where you convert. Companies that master all three stages convert systematically better than those focusing on just one.
What is a marketing funnel and why you need one
A marketing funnel is a model describing the customer journey from awareness to purchase. The top is wide — many people become aware. The middle is narrower — a portion shows interest. The bottom is narrowest — a fraction becomes customers.
The framework originates from the AIDA model from 1898, but in modern digital marketing we use TOFU/MOFU/BOFU because it is more practical.
According to Salesforce, 67 percent of marketers use a funnel framework and report 45 percent higher conversion rates (Salesforce, "State of Marketing Report," 2025).
TOFU (Top of Funnel): Build awareness
The top is about reaching people who do not know you yet. Content here is not sales-driven — it is valuable, relevant and accessible. Blog articles, guides, infographics, videos and social media posts.
Channels: SEO, social media, YouTube, guest publishing and awareness ads. For SEO strategies, see our SEO guide.
Do not expect conversions from TOFU. The goal is to attract and make a good first impression.
- Content types: Blog, guides, infographics, video, podcasts
- Channels: SEO, social media, YouTube, awareness ads
- Metrics: Reach, traffic, new users, time on page
- Goal: Awareness and first touchpoint
MOFU (Middle of Funnel): Nurture and build trust
The middle converts awareness into interest and trust. People know you but are not ready to buy. Your job is to position yourself as the best solution.
MOFU content: Webinars, case studies, whitepapers, email sequences, comparison guides. These often require an email address (gated content).
Email marketing is the most important MOFU channel. See our email marketing guide and remarketing guide.
- Content types: Case studies, webinars, whitepapers, email sequences
- Channels: Email, remarketing, LinkedIn, webinar platforms
- Metrics: Leads, email list growth, engagement
- Goal: Build trust and move leads toward decision
BOFU (Bottom of Funnel): Convert and close
The bottom is where the decision is made. Leads are warm. Your job is to remove the last barriers: risk, uncertainty, price objections.
BOFU content: Free trials, consultations, demo sessions, pricing tables, ROI calculators and guarantees. See our PPC landing page guide.

The modern funnel is not linear: Google Messy Middle
Google published in 2020 their study Decoding Decisions showing that the customer journey is chaotic — users jump between exploration and evaluation in an unpredictable loop (Google, "Decoding Decisions: The Messy Middle," 2020).
A customer might start with a Google search (TOFU), read your blog, leave the site, watch a competitor YouTube video, receive your remarketing ad (MOFU), and eventually convert. The journey is not a straight line — it is a spiral.
You need content and presence at all funnel stages, all the time.
Content mapping: Right content for the right stage
Content mapping is the process of systematically linking content types to funnel stages. Categorize all existing content as TOFU, MOFU or BOFU.
Most businesses discover they have plenty of TOFU, some MOFU and almost nothing at BOFU. This is a classic gap.
Prioritize MOFU and BOFU because that is where the money is. See our content marketing guide.
Paid advertising across the funnel
Paid advertising is the most powerful tool for accelerating the funnel because you control who sees what, when.
TOFU advertising: Video ads on YouTube and Meta, Demand Gen in Google. MOFU: Remarketing of visitors, Lead Gen Forms on LinkedIn. BOFU: Search ads for purchase keywords.

Measuring funnel performance: Drop-off rates and conversion per stage
The most important metric is conversion rate between each stage: How many TOFU visitors become MOFU leads? How many MOFU leads become BOFU conversions?
Typical benchmarks: TOFU to MOFU = 2-5 percent. MOFU to BOFU = 10-25 percent. BOFU to customer = 20-35 percent for B2B (HubSpot, "Marketing Funnel Benchmarks," 2025).
Set up funnel reporting in Google Analytics or your CRM. When you identify high drop-off, you know exactly where to focus optimization efforts.
Framework for funnel optimization
Start with the stage that has the highest drop-off rate. Analyze why people fall off and test improvements.
For TOFU: Improve content quality. For MOFU: Improve lead magnets and email sequences. For BOFU: Simplify conversion process and add trust signals.
Run one optimization at a time and measure the impact in isolation. See our CRO guide.
Common funnel mistakes that cost you customers
Mistake 1: All budget on BOFU, nothing on TOFU. Those who invest in TOFU build an audience they can convert more cheaply over time.
Mistake 2: No nurturing in MOFU. Average B2B buying cycle is 6-12 months (Gartner, "B2B Buying Journey Report," 2025). Without email sequences and remarketing you lose leads you already paid to attract.
Mistake 3: Same message for all funnel stages. Adapt the message to where in the funnel the person is. See the glossary for definitions of funnel, lead generation, conversion rate, TOFU, MOFU and BOFU.
