Every year hundreds of trend articles recycle the same vague predictions. This guide is different. I have distilled the 12 changes that actually affect how you should work with digital marketing in 2026 — based on data, observed market shifts and experiences from hundreds of campaigns at LeapJet. Some of these trends are already in full effect, others are in early stages. But all require that you act now to avoid falling behind.
AI-first marketing: From experiment to standard
In 2024 companies experimented with AI. In 2025 early adopters integrated it. In 2026 AI is standard. According to McKinsey, 72 percent of marketing departments now use AI tools daily (McKinsey, "The State of AI in Marketing," 2026).
AI affects every aspect: Content production, advertising, analysis and customer communication.
Winners use AI smartest, not most. Combine AI with human expertise. See our AI automation guide.
GEO and the new search landscape
Generative engine optimization (GEO) has gone from buzzword to necessity. With Google AI Overviews as standard and ChatGPT Search with 100 plus million users, an increasing share of information searches are AI-mediated.
According to Gartner, 25 percent of all search traffic will come through AI-generated interfaces by end of 2026 (Gartner, "AI Search Forecast," 2026).
Optimize for entity recognition, write citable content and build topical authority. See our GEO guide and LLM visibility guide.
Zero-click and the death of traditional traffic metrics
Over 58 percent of Google searches end without a click (SparkToro, 2024). The traditional metric — organic traffic — tells less of the story every year.
New metrics: brand visibility, branded search volume and citation frequency in AI answers.
Invest in brand building as an SEO strategy and build first-party relationships. See our zero-click strategy guide.
Privacy-first marketing: Cookies, consent mode and server-side
Third-party cookies are in their final phase. Google Chrome is phasing them out in 2026.
Replacements: Google Privacy Sandbox, consent mode v2, server-side tracking, first-party data strategies and contextual advertising.
According to Forrester, companies without a first-party data strategy will see 30-40 percent decline in advertising effectiveness (Forrester, "The End of Third-Party Cookies," 2025). See our server-side tracking guide.
Video dominance: Short-form, AI-generated and interactive
Video is the dominant content format. According to HubSpot, 92 percent of marketers say video gives positive ROI (HubSpot, "State of Marketing Report," 2026).
Three trends: 1) Short-form continues growing. 2) AI-generated video lowers the production threshold. 3) Interactive video increases engagement.
Video strategy is no longer optional. See our video marketing guide.
Personalization at scale: AI-driven and real-time
According to McKinsey, 71 percent of consumers expect personalized interactions and 76 percent get frustrated when they do not get them (McKinsey, "The Value of Personalization," 2025).
In practice, personalization starts with data: Collect first-party data through website, email and CRM. Segment based on behavior.

Community-led growth: Beyond social media
Social media has become pay-to-play — organic reach on Facebook pages is under 5 percent. Companies building solely on social media are building on rented ground.
Community-led growth: Slack channels, Discord servers, member portals and Mastermind groups.
According to CMX, companies with active communities generate 3x higher customer retention (CMX, "Community Value Report," 2025).
Voice and visual search maturation
According to Juniper Research, voice search will account for 30 percent of e-commerce transactions in 2026 (Juniper Research, "Voice Commerce Forecast," 2025).
Google Lens has over 20 billion visual searches per month (Google, "Visual Search Statistics," 2025).
Optimize for conversational queries and ensure product images have descriptive alt text.
Sustainability and ethical marketing
According to NielsenIQ, 73 percent of European consumers say sustainability affects their purchase decisions (NielsenIQ, "European Consumer Sustainability Survey," 2025).
The EU Green Claims Directive requires that environmental claims in marketing are verifiable and documented.
Be honest about what you actually do for sustainability. Show concrete numbers and actions, not vague promises.
B2B buying behavior changes
According to Gartner, 75 percent of B2B buyers prefer a seller-free buying experience (Gartner, "Future of B2B Buying Report," 2025).
You need content that answers all questions before contact: pricing page, comparison pages, ROI calculator, case studies.
An average of 6-10 people are involved in complex B2B purchases. Create content for each role.
Marketing automation democratization
Marketing automation tools are now available for businesses of all sizes. HubSpot Free, Mailchimp, Brevo, ActiveCampaign and others.
AI has accelerated democratization. You no longer need a specialist for sophisticated workflows.
For SMBs that have not implemented marketing automation yet: 2026 is the year. Start simply with a welcome series for new subscribers.
Predictions for 2027
AI agents that perform marketing tasks autonomously. GEO as a standard discipline. Personalization as expectation.
Consolidation of advertising platforms — fewer but more powerful. TikTok Shop and Amazon Advertising will take market share in the Nordics.
The most important advice: Do not wait for trends to mature — by then it is too late. Visit our glossary and see our services in SEO, AI automation and GEO.
